Workshop Description

Learn how to promote and embrace diversity through literature and primary sources that allow Trans and LGBQ+ students to accurately see themselves reflected in the curriculum (even when your district is in the beginning phases of implementation). One veteran teacher discusses pedagogical methods for infusing curriculum with LGBTQ+ affirming content into existing curricular frameworks.

Review and practice recognizing useful books that have Trans themes and useful books that don't, but can still be mined for framing Trans inclusion and discussion around broader themes of affirmation, advocacy, and empathy. every book is an opportunity!

Educators will examine texts during the workshop session and simulate “text-talks” in thinking-map form that examine broad topics. A great practice opportunity for educators to turn any text into a platform for discussion about Trans experience as well as the confluence of myriad identities.

Teachers, counselors, administrators, parents, and all education constituents welcome!

Presenter Bio

Mick Rabin taught in the classroom for 21 years. Working at a Title-1 school with limited resources and under district policies of limited scope, Mick needed to get creative. Now a project resource teacher for Youth Advocacy in SD Unified (and many years with GLSEN San Diego), Mick has created and launched programming focused on bullying intervention and has facilitated numerous PDs that explore resourceful ways to promote identity exploration through a curricular lens with a priority for embracing diversity including the LGBTQIA experience and building allyship for ALL students.
