Como Puedo Apoyar a Mi Joven? Gender Affirming Support for Latinx Trans Youth

Saturday, August 3, 2019 at 4:20 PM–5:50 PM PDT
Sierra 5
Workshop Description

This workshop will be conducted primarily in Spanish (bilingual English/Spanish) for Latino families with trans or gender expansive youth. According to the 2015 National Transgender Discrimination Survey, Latino and Latina transgender and gender non-conforming people face some of the highest levels of discrimination. In addition, it is important to consider the impact of the intersection of immigration status, religion, language barriers and cultural norms and beliefs on the emotional well-being of Latinx trans* youth. This workshop will provide psychoeducation to families on the history of gender identity and identify possible psychosocial, medical and mental health concerns. In addition, participants will be able to learn the importance of gender-affirming support and discuss how to provide gender-affirming support to their youth through a culturally and linguistically sensitive lens.
