A Cultural Snapshot of Trans Families in Hong Kong
Workshop Description
What is it like to live as a trans/TGNC person or their family members on the other side of the globe? How does one explore their identity, connect with others, and find resources in an East Asia context? How do parents react when they know about their child’s TGNC identity and how do they cope with the pertinent challenges in the Hong Kong Chinese society? This workshop will give an overview of the situations for adult and adolescent trans persons in Hong Kong, and reveal parents’ struggle and coping experiences in maintaining their relationship with their trans child and other family members during gender transition of their child.

Kaspar Wan is a trans-man from Hong Kong. He has set up an organization, Gender Empowerment, which provides various supports to the transgender community and works with different stakeholders to create social change. Kaspar has participated in different regional and international meetings concerning transgender issues, such as the WPATH Symposium and the UN-organised “Being LGBTI in Asia” regional dialogue. “Kaspar X – If I Had a Soul” is an award-winning short documentary he made on his journey of finding himself. Kaspar is now doing his Master’s research on parents of transgender persons.
