Learning Outcomes

The current status of educational continuity in states affected by Hurricanes, wildfires and flooding events in the last decade. Strategies are evaluated for successful outcomes related to continuity in education, and minimization of lost time. These strategies will recommend best practices for affected school districts, especially those in areas that are prone to reoccurring disasters such as flooding, for means of mitigating and minimizing impacts from natural disasters for students in their regions.

Session Description
Natural disasters have affected millions of Americans in the last three years. If the trend toward more severe wildfire, flooding, and Hurricane events continues, the impacts to formal education will become increasingly significant and cause a lasting economic impact to affected areas far beyond damages to other forms of infrastructure. Much of the time lost in the educational process cannot be regained, therefore it is of paramount importance that processes be put in place to mitigate time loss due to displacement and damage during natural disasters. An examination of the responses in different areas undergoing response and recovery from different types of natural disasters reveals a set of best practices that should be put in place in order to protect students from disruptions that could have lasting effects.
