Session Abstract
Our era of globalized knowledge sharing presents new tools for tracking scholarly work and its subsequent impact. In this session, we examine how to set up and use services like Google Scholar and ORCIDs to assess and monitor scholarly output, citations, and evaluate the influence of individual authors or works.
Target Audience
This session will benefit adult educators who wish to contribute to theory, practice, and policy through dissemination of research and best practices but have questions about monitoring productivity and personal impact. We encourage academics, practitioners, and students to attend this session, especially those wanting to track their work and the way it is used by others.
Learning Outcomes
After participating in this session, participants will be able to
- Identify useful scholarly tools for managing publications and tracking citations, such as Google Scholar and ORCID.
- Create and utilize accounts for the aforementioned services and tools.
Session Description
Adult learning offers a rich variety in research and practice, and many adult educators strive to share their research findings and practice experiences. Doing so is particularly important as we advocate for human rights, economic empowerment, and environmental sustainability. Thus, adult educators face the challenge of disseminating their work and tracking the extent to which that work is utilized by others. Given the scope of possibility for knowledge sharing in our globalized society, a vast number of opportunities exist to assist with the process. In this session, we present tools for tracking scholarly work and its subsequent impact.
This session shares:
- Detailed information on select resources, including Google Scholar and ORCID.
- Ways to use such resources to track individual’s work, the way the work is used by others, and as measures of impact.
Combined, these tools and resources support dissemination of research findings and practice experiences, and measures of scholarly impact.
Format & Technique
This session will be organized as follows:
- First, participants will (optionally) discuss their experiences managing and tracking their publications, citations, and impact, and identify common questions.
- Second, session facilitators will share information on scholarly resources, including Google Scholar and ORCID.
- Third, participants will engage in an activity to explore the utility of such services and customize a plan for further investigating resources of particular interest.
