Session Description
With the ever-changing complexion of healthcare education, the importance of working with healthcare educators in making the transition from clinician to academician is critical. Therefore, the Adult Education Program at ECU has been working with local dental and medical faculty to provide a comprehensive professional development experience through the Education in the Healthcare Professions (EHP) Graduate Certificate program. Of the various program objectives, one of the most challenging components to evaluate has been the transformation of enrollees’ beliefs about effective teaching and their evolving professional identity as adult educators. While current enrollees and completers from both dental and medical faculty have offered anecdotal support of meaningful change in their engagement with learners, there was a need to examine these phenomena for measurable and authentic perspective transformation and actual application of learned techniques in the instructional process. A brief description of the EHP program and the research design will be followed by a discussion of findings. The session will conclude with considerations as to the application of findings to diverse adult learning communities/environments through the development of individual action plans.
Format & Technique
A panel of three faculty will describe the EHP program, research design, and findings. A group discussion will follow to examine areas of potential application for attendees’ teaching and learning environments.
