Making a Case for a School-Based Children’s Savings Program

Short Abstract
This presentation describes the development of a school-based savings project for young children in elementary schools that have 50 or more of its student population who receive federal lunch subsidy. The Theory of Planned Behavior was used to guide the design of the project. Now in its 5th year, a total of 1,865 children (K – 5th graders) from 28 public elementary schools are participating. Altogether, the children have saved more than $325,000, with an average saving per child per year of $112. Reasons for why a school-based children savings program are discussed.
