CDLT PreConference Symposium: Best Practices in Distance Learning or Technology for Adult Learners

Presentation Format Requested

CDLT PreConference Only: Concurrent (20 to 45 minutes)

Session Abstract

This presentation will showcase new teaching methods for online higher education by demonstrating how movies, shows, and YouTube videos are used in a reflexive process. During the presentation, the process of action—watching it, reflection in the forms of analytical memos, discussion, vlogging reflexively, and then critique of media shown.

Target Audience

The presentation is for any member of online higher education programs; especially, facilitators, students, and program planners. Program coordinator’s and administration staff of distant learning program, or programs that have online classes will gain valuable knowledge of tools and resources to consider for their own programs. Professors who use online applications; additionally, any professor interested in learning more about synchronous learning and best practices will be encouraged to attend. Graduates and future applicants of graduate degrees in any field would enjoy participating in this session.

Learning Outcomes

Attendees will be guided to the critical andragogical methods of practice where movies, shows, and YouTube videos are used in a reflexive process. During the presentation, the process of action—watching it, reflection in the forms of analytical memos, discussion, vlogging reflexively, and then a critique of media using a theoretical matrix will be shown and an application of this process worked with the audience. A worked example will show the intentionality and duality of using the media as a process and activity, then to relating the process to research design and methodology. Attendee's will be invited to vlog and post.

Session Description

collaborate and share ideas.
The purpose of the presentation is to demonstrate and engage in video clip discussion in formal settings. The show This is Us is examined to show microaggression and social justice. The movie Inside Out would be used as a metaphor for the critical reflection that must take place to become self-directed in the journey to transformative learning. Removing the context of the movie and showcasing the reflexive position of learning to fail and critically reflect. Other movies I will use: Lion King for transformative learning, Coco for social context, Ratatouille and Wall-E to describe self-directed learning, and others. The researcher infers that by demonstrating intuitive methods to facilitate adult learning the audience will gain lifelong tools to promote learner-centered learning. To explore theories and social justice concerns in this manner encourages participants to discover new ways to engage and mediate learners to greater outcomes. Taking the films out of context provides ways to analytically address personal experiences to share and self-reflect. Adapting to the culture of the learning environment, we need to stop relying on lecture and PowerPoints to teach

Format & Technique

The concurrent session will address the process of use of media (films, TV shows, YouTube Videos) as a method of reflexivity. Then, a demonstration of different working ways to use this method will be highlighted engaging the audience as they were the learners. A new way to critique media is showcased in the theoretical matrix. Analytic memos are used to first reflect on the media; discussion questions and prompts are then displayed, and the use of vlogs for reflective practice shown. The presentation displays how the entire process sets up learners to contextualize how to plan and design research.
