Short Abstract

While college students are well-studied subjects regarding their financial knowledge and practices, primary focus groups are often native-born White or African American populations. To study America’s growing cultural diversity, we will examine the financial information sources, financial knowledge, and financial behaviors among young adults, many of whom are first generation college students, ethnic minorities, and immigrants or children of immigrants. The data for this survey research are collected at a large regional comprehensive university in Southern California. We expect to identify how financial information from various sources, such as parents and the Internet, have varying impacts on the financial knowledge and financial behaviors of the study participants. This study will add to the knowledge about less studied populations in terms of family backgrounds, as they relate to parental educational attainment, ethnicity, and immigration status.
