Abstract
Approximately 270,000 school-aged children are in foster care placements each year and approximately 90 percent have experienced a traumatic event. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends trauma informed systems of care for youth in foster care. School counselors can be leaders in developing trauma-sensitive schools by introducing the topic to leadership, sharing information at staff meetings, and having conversations about the impact of adverse experiences on the brain, learning, and behavior.
