Adult learners face fear and the unknown every day. In their minds learning to read is a mystery and beyond their reach. Educators must find ways to engage their students and keep them coming back. Using a white board and markers, Rob Shindler, author of Hot Dogs & Hamburgers, public speaker, and classroom teacher to adult reading students, demonstrates how combining timeless phonics with creativity and passion can create a positive and engaging learning environment that will keep your students coming back again and again.

Over 36 million adults in the United States lack basic literacy or English communication skills. These adults face the fear of the unknown on a daily basis, and often never seek help to learn to read or write out of shame or embarrassment. The concurrent session will be presented as a demonstration of how to teach adult literacy students and/or adult students with disabilities how to read.  Through the use of a whiteboard and markers, combined with  phonics, creativity and passion, educators will learn how to engage adult learners in the classroom and provide them with tools for lifelong learning.
