Short Abstract

Households headed by single women are disproportionately more food insecure than other types of households. However, little is known about the mechanism under which these become food insecure during marital disruptions. This paper draws on a national representative sample to see whether socioeconomic characteristics observed around the time of marital dissolution can explain the phenomenon. Results show that the food insecurity of separated women cannot be fully explained by their pre-dissolution economic conditions. Nonetheless, women’s greater food insecurity relative to men’s could be attributed to the gender gap in economic capacity after dissolution. The effects of socioeconomic characteristics on food security seem to vary across marital status and gender as well. Further research is needed to validate the results.
