Proposal Summary

This presentation will feature findings and research on the benefits of Integrative Health Coaching and offer a lively, interactive practice session for participants to try out a coach approach. Coaching is distinguished from health education, psychotherapy and counseling, and requires a shift in mindset and “stepping back” for most health practitioners to excel in the powerful coaching dialog. Health coaching has been increasingly employed to enhance individuals’ engagement in health-enhancing lifestyles that prevent and treat chronic disease in numerous settings such as corporate wellness centers, medical systems, health plans, private clinical practices and health clubs.
In this presentation, the co-presenters will discuss the two very different settings in which they utilized a coach approach, and they will share outcome data from their observational studies. The two settings are: 1) how a coach approach was utilized as a self-care and self-management tool for bedside RNs at Stanford University Medical Center ; and 2) how a coach approach was used in working with underserved and street-dwelling adults throughout San Francisco to facilitate more efficient use of clinical services and better self-care.
Sarah DeVincenzi will present her work at Stanford Meg Jordan will present her ongoing ethnographic study of coaching applications for non-paying populations in the Bay Area. The integrative health coaching process and structure employed in each setting were based on the national standards and key competencies defined by the National Nurse Coaching Board Certification (NC-BC) and the International Consortium for Health and Wellness Coaches (NBC-HWC). Participants will also learn about the opportunities for practitioners to advance their knowledge and skills in developing the coaching relationship, communication techniques, processes for behavior change, ethics and professional scope of practice for coaching.
