Proposal Summary

Insomnia is a prevalent condition among health care providers and commonly encountered in the primary care setting. This interactive workshop will engage the audience in experiencing integrative treatment approaches for insomnia. The workshop will be led by 3 integrative Family Medicine physicians and a clinical health psychologist. All workshop leaders currently care for underserved patients at an urban Family Medicine residency program. They will engage small groups of participants in various integrative treatments for insomnia. The 4 experiential and interactive stations for management of insomnia will include: botanicals/supplements; mind-body therapies/aromatherapy; acupuncture/acupressure; behavioral modifications. Participants will rotate through each station and will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in a sensory experience of touch, scent, and taste with various herbals/botanicals/supplements to treat insomnia such as valerian root, chamomile, lemon balm, passionflower, skullcap, and lavender. They will learn to choose high quality supplement products such as melatonin, magnesium, and B-vitamins. At the mind-body station, participants will be guided through relaxation therapies such as progressive muscle relaxation, breathing exercises, and meditations for sleep. They will learn about free and low cost useful mind-body phone apps that can be recommended to patients. Participants will have the opportunity to learn helpful acupuncture points for sleep/stress/anxiety and experience brief acupuncture treatments at the third station. At the 4th station, participants will gain knowledge of behavioral interventions for insomnia with focus on CBTi interventions and sleep restriction. The content of this workshop will be within the framework of providing evidence based integrative services within an underserved setting; thus, keeping cost, compliance, patient preferences, access, and health care disparities at the forefront of our proposed interventions.
