Proposal Summary

Based on a two-year project, we will present background information about our self-care tool, My Wellness Coach, that provides health content, health assessment, and goal setting/tracking for healthy behavior change from a motivational interviewing, health coaching, and integrative health influenced approach to self-directed wellbeing. Designed for use by the individual or in-conjunction with 1:1 or group engagements (in clinic: groups, community health workers, behavioral health specialists, etc. and as Employee Wellness). Based on feedback from an earlier pilot study of the app, content and interactions were simplified to ensure broader accessibility: 5th grade or lower reading level, choose an answer, and limited typed responses required. A demonstration of the design and key features of the app will help participants understand the user experience and how it can be used with patients to support behavior change. Details will be shared about the most recent evaluation pilot of the mobile app with underserved participants, in collaboration with a local FQHC (2018) including highlights on significant health improvements, user engagement and user experience. We will discuss various implementations of such a tool to support underserved patients, as well as the limitations or barriers that may present. The session will wrap up with a focus on experiential self-care model after the app and integrative health coaching. Participants will use provided handouts that mirror mobile app design to self-evaluate their satisfaction in the 7 Core Areas of Health (sleep, nutrition, movement, resilience, relationships, environment, spirituality), create a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timely) healthy behavior change goal and one action step to take in the next few days towards reaching that goal. Opportunities to beta-test the app will be available, but participants are not required to download or use the app to fully engage in this session.
