Venga y Relajese: Approaches for preventing and reducing stress in uninsured women

Graham Multipurpose Room
Proposal Summary

Venga y Relajese is an intervention designed for the uninsured patient population of Wisconsin's largest free clinic, Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic. Serving a predominantly Latinx clientele, AWPCC works in conjunction with the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine Training in Urban Medicine and Public Health (TRIUMPH) Program to deliver this intervention program. Venga y Relajese was developed to address the high frequency of mental and/or physical health "un-well" days in a month noted by clients during their visits.

AWPCC patients often share that their level of stress is impacting their ability to practice health-supporting activities. Un-managed stress can impact one's ability to make health choices in eating, physical activity, and smoking - key risk factors for cardiovascular disease. The ability of patients to recognize stressor and develop strategies to reduce the intensity of stress is critical to their success at self-care.

The program is designed to provide information on how to reduce the impact of daily stress through:
1) Understanding and recognizing stressful triggers.
2) Practicing simple stress reduction techniques together.
3) Sharing and group support through "talking circles" and small group discussion.
4) Accessing community-clinical resources.
5) Individual weekly goal-setting conducted together as a group.
