Proposal Summary

LifeLong Medical Care in East Oakland, CA has an integrative Wellness Center with a multidisciplinary staff co-located at an FQHC clinic. This has evolved through a unique partnership between allopathic providers with an expansive whole person vision of “wellness” and a passionate desire to create a space that would bring together patients, integrative medicine providers, and community, as well as meet their own needs to find a sustainable model to address burnout.
Over time we have brought in the support of many key stakeholders: administration, voices of patients, individual funders in the community, the enthusiasm of volunteers from Americorps, community, local colleges interested in health career futures, local integrative medicine training programs, integrative medicine practitioners of various modalities, volunteer teachers, allopathic primary care practitioners, and community service program collaborators. By engaging the innovative ideas, energy and hard work of all these parties, we have developed a robust, financially sustainable program with a combination of group visits, classes, and 1:1 integrative sessions that we would like to share and see expand into the future as a model for developing programs that address wellness needs of ALL the people-patients, staff, providers and community-impacted by the high stress that affects us all working in underserved communities.
This session will offer a framework of our vision of wellness. We will share details of our history and program, how we have organically arrived at our current state, and challenges and lessons learned as we stayed flexible with financial, staffing, program, space and growth pressures. We will then engage a panel discussion with participants in our program from leadership, allopathic & integrative practitioners, patients, volunteers and program staff, looking at issues like quality, self-care, inclusivity, diversity, equity, isolation, social justice, data, and the creation of community.
