Proposal Summary

Chronic disease and pain continues to be a serious issue for millions of Americans. Additionally, health issues disproportionately impact underserved and marginalized communities. Yoga as a therapeutic tool has utility to communicate across difference and have a positive impact on health and well-being. In fact, emerging research points to the effect of yoga in supporting both regulation and resilience of the nervous system as key to its benefit for both physical and psychological health. Yoga offers body-based practices such as breathing techniques and movement, which may help foster changes in emotion, mood, and posture. Yoga also offers meditation practices and ethical principles as self-regulatory strategies. This session will share the importance of including breathing and relaxation into a specialized practice for the relief of pain and to enhanced well-being. In addition, we will discuss yoga theory, the profession of yoga therapy and have three experiential components in which attendees will learn and practice simple, practical poses to increase energy, clarity and flexibility as well as effective techniques to build resilience to remain calm and collected in the midst of stressful circumstances.
