Interactive Dictations for Listening, Speaking and Writing

Thursday, May 8, 2014 at 10:00 AM–10:45 AM EDT
Grande South
Session Abstract

Present-day dictations go beyond improving listening ability; they promote skill integration.  Workshop participants will work with five types of dictation:  cloze, pair, prediction, dictogloss, and note-taking, using authentic, current, and motivating materials.  A large handout will allow participants to use these ideas immediately upon returning to their classrooms.

Biographical Statement

Catherine Sadow and Judy DeFilippo shared an office at Northeastern University's English Language Center for over 20 years.  When Cathy did a presentation on dictation at a MATSOL conference in the 1990s, it became an immediate hit.  This led to the sharing of ideas of the different types of dictation techniques they wanted to try with their students.  It also led to co-authoring four ESL texts on dictations for four proficiency levels.
