Household Savings Patterns: A Longitudinal Look

Short Abstract

To better understand intertemporal motives and other factors that influence the decision to have a savings account, we analyze how a household’s personal attitudes, financial behaviors, economic conditions, and demographic characteristics influence savings account ownership.  We are particularly interested in examining how changes to these attributes may have contributed to the household’s acquisition or closure of a savings account overtime.  The 2007-2009 SCF panel gives us a unique opportunity to gain insights into the household’s decision to hold a savings account and will help inform policymakers and others interested in better understanding household saving behavior.
