Workshop Description

Our school has a bullying problem (targeting but not limited to trans/GNC students). . .so “Be an upstander!” we exclaim to our students. But they never truly understand what that means and HOW TO BE an upstander. Likewise, even when they DO know a few interventions, we are patently unrealistic [verging on outright dishonest] with them about how likely WE AS ADULTS would be to choose those same interventions if we were in their place. This workshop will help educators support students in taking a deep dive into empathy, solidarity, and action. It focuses on identity-based bullying. Likewise, it equips the student participants with a menu of prevention/intervention/post-vention options that THEY THEMSELVES brainstorm and evaluate for potential risk and effectiveness. Bystanders are empowered and transformed into agents of action--Ally Action--on behalf of ALL classmates when they need it the most.

Presenter Bio

Mick Rabin taught in the classroom for 21 years. Working at a Title-1 school with limited resources and under district policies of limited scope, Mick needed to get creative. Now a project resource teacher for Youth Advocacy in San Diego Unified (and many years with GLSEN San Diego), Mick has facilitated numerous PDs that explore resourceful ways to promote identity exploration through a curricular lens with a priority for embracing diversity including the LGBTQIA experience.
