Applying Transformative Learning in Teaching

To transform our thinking, transformative learning, as defined by Cranton (2006), is “a process of examining, questioning, validating, and revising our perspectives” (p. 23). The purpose of this conversation and session activity is to share how creative uses of role play via case study analysis and the application of a transformative learning model provide teachers a way to encourage students to think critically to transform their thinking. Based on research by Cranton (2006), Mezirow (1978) and Tisdell (2012), this interactive session provides an imaginative opportunity to experience the process of perspective discovery. It is an example of how teachers may present activities and information that transform how students view their world.
