Applying Transformative Learning in Teaching

Introducing volunteerism to students is a way to allow them to experience new aspects of the community and to seek out fields in which they may want to participate. Service learning is a form of education based on experiences and reflections on actions toward making a difference in the community. This is a way to learn skills that cannot be taught in the classroom. Secondary data was collected from students enrolled in Cultural Competence in Healthcare for the 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 academic years using student responses to questions regarding the service learning project on the Southwestern Oklahoma State University service learning student evaluation form. Results show a positive correlation between participating in a required service-learning classroom activities with a desire to continue to participate in future service learning courses, recommending service-learning activities to their peers, and willingness to volunteer in the future.
