Applying Transformative Learning in Teaching
In this this session, 8-20 volunteers will participate in an experiential activity that parallels the cognitive stages suggested by Mezirow (1997) that illuminate the transformative learning process. The experiential activity introduces a challenge (disorienting dilemma) for participants where they will rely on their communication and relationship skills to navigate and complete the experience together. Through engagement in the experiential activity, participants aim to increase their self-awareness and self-acceptance, develop and apply problem-solving skills, demonstrate consistently responsible behavior, while also strengthening positive attitudes related to the learning process. After completing the activity, the facilitator will engage participants in dialogue to process their experience, discuss potential applications to other settings, and discuss potential modifications based on the learning needs of the environment.
1.Attendees will be exposed to and participate in an experiential and transformative activity that parallels the cognitive stages suggested by Mezirow that promote transformative learning.
2.Attendees and participants will take away applied knowledge of experience and/or observation to apply to other settings relevant to their discipline.
3.Attendees and participants will be connected to other resources that provide guidelines for experiential activities to be used inside and outside the classroom.
