Short Description

Technology continues to change the way in which people work, communicate, and learn. Discussion boards are particularly well suited to creating a collaborative community for alt. cert. candidate support by their flexible, borderless, and innovative nature. The needs of the community grow and change with the participants. Meaning is constructed through online interactions. A sociolinguistic lens reveals patterns of E-mentoring and support. Alt. cert. candidates who collaborate with, learn from, and make use of the knowledge created by these networks help address teacher attrition and teacher shortages. This research describes a pre-service teacher network created at Central Washington University in Ellensburg Washington, USA. Using interactional ethnography and Henri’s Computer Conferencing and Content Analysis framework (1992) the in-depth cognitive processes that emerge through posted interactions offer evidence of support language and E-mentoring patterns that contribute to strong support systems for ARC candidates entering the teaching profession.
