Short Description
Alternative Routes were first created in law in Washington State in 2001. The rules governing programs meant to create innovative design methods, job embedded learning, and address teacher shortages, sat nearly unchangeable for 17 years. In 2018 the Washington State Legislature took action to move the governing framework from rules to administrative code. In January 2019 updated rules we approved by Washington’s Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). Many of these initial changes were minor; however, substantial changes took place too: changes to testing requirements, who is eligible to apply, specific entry requirements, and shortage area requirements.
As a part of this change in governing structures, PESB now reports on outcomes including:
- where program completers are hired;
- how Alternative Routes can support diversifying the educator workforce;
- the three and five year retention rates for Alternative Routes completers in Washington;
- and the number of program completers who are hired in the district in which they completed their residency.
Participants will leave with examples of best practices, data access across the educator pathway, and considerations for important data collection structures.
