Short Description

Alternative Routes were first created in law in Washington State in 2001. The rules governing programs meant to create innovative design methods, job embedded learning, and address teacher shortages, sat nearly unchangeable for 17 years. In 2018 the Washington State Legislature took action to move the governing framework from rules to administrative code. In January 2019 updated rules we approved by Washington’s Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). Many of these initial changes were minor; however, substantial changes took place too: changes to testing requirements, who is eligible to apply, specific entry requirements, and shortage area requirements. 

As a part of this change in governing structures, PESB now reports on outcomes including:
