Short Description

In 2018, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education awarded a Center of Excellence Grant to Columbia College to establish the Alternative Pathways to Educator Certification Center (APEC), an alternative certification pathway offered through a higher education institution. The APEC Center began recruiting the first cohort of APEC Fellows in June 2018. Our recruitment efforts suggest that schools already employ committed, quality candidates, many who aspire to become classroom teachers. The APEC Program, offered in partnership with critical needs school districts, provide opportunities for working adults to pursue certification. The majority of our participants are experienced instructional assistants while some have worked in schools as computer lab instructors or response-to-intervention assistants. The program allows participants to complete coursework in online and traditional formats, while receiving mentoring and coaching through their work as classroom assistants.
