Short Description

As a member of the Professional Education Unit at the University of West Florida, the TeacherReady educator preparation institute (EPI) seeks to recruit, prepare, support, and complete effective early career teachers leading to positive impact on student learning and effective school staffing. The program includes evidence-based program experiences from recruitment through completion to develop engaged and reflective candidates focused on planning and alignment of goals and actions, feedback, and assessment. This reinforces for candidates the processes of examination and evaluation of one’s own professional practice, in addition to the progress monitoring of student learning. Presentation of evidence from multiple measures will be used to show teacher candidates develop deep understanding. The UWF TeacherReady team monitors a range of recruitment, admissions, and enrollment data; in addition to retention, progression/persistence, and completer data. For example, trend data from applications to UWF TeacherReady suggest the improved recruitment of high-quality academic and diverse candidates. In 2016-17, the average undergraduate GPA for applicants was 3.12 (up from 3.01 in 2012-13); 38.1% are non-white (up from 11.81% in 2012-2013); 38% were male (up from 36% in 2012-13); and 49% were teachers of record or para-professionals at the time of application (up from 45% in 2012-13). In addition, about 15% of the applicant pool is affiliated with the military and about 8% earned a STEM-related degree as an undergraduate. Data are collected, analyzed, and reviewed on a consistent basis, whether it be daily, weekly, or monthly to ensure focus on pre-candidate/candidate quality and success.
