Short Description

The Transition to Teaching (T2T) Program is a grow-your-own, alternative route to teaching certification in Washington State. Designed to address barriers experienced by underrepresented groups in rural, central Washington, we celebrated program completion for candidates in our first cohort in 2019. As we honored these first “graduates,” we took a step back to ask, “were we successful?” The purpose of this poster presentation is to share how we used data to explore this question and what the data told us.

This poster presentation will describe how one program utilized data collected from candidates and stakeholders to evaluate program effectiveness. Data from key assessments will be shared. Specifically, presenters will provide information about assessments and data collection methods during one cohort cycle, from program admissions to completion. Specific data analysis of key assessments will be provided including: 1. candidate competency portfolios; 2. Candidate edTPA scores; and 3. Candidate field experience assessments. Finally, presenters will share how this data was analyzed and used to informed programmatic decisions.

Key questions include:

  1. Did our efforts to attract, recruit, select, and retain people of color and from diverse backgrounds succeed?
  2. Did we prepare our mentors and supervisors to support candidates?
  3. Did we ensure that T2T certified teachers are effective and responsive to student needs?
  4. What programmatic changes should we consider to improve our effectiveness in meeting our central purpose as an alternative route program?
