Short Description

Effective induction and mentoring are critical to retaining new teachers and increasing their impact on student achievement. Research historically indicates that student achievement strongly correlates with student engagement. Given the positive association of student engagement with higher student achievement, higher graduation rates, and the eventual pursuit of higher education, studies which explore how to support and increase student engagement are particularly important to academic institutions preparing teachers both through alternative certification routes and traditionally.  This presentation will focus on the results of a study that assessed the impact of coaching on student engagement and the teaching practices of both alternatively certified and traditionally certified teachers. All participating teachers received training in a program with curriculum focused specifically on preparing teachers to be highly effective in urban communities. The results of this mixed-method design study indicates that twelve weeks of coaching yielded statistically significant growth in student engagement. The study involved fifty-five K-12 teachers, thirty-nine of which were traditionally certified having taught 1-10+ years and sixteen first year alternatively certified teachers. The teachers that participated in the study when interviewed attributed student engagement growth to teaching practice improvement resulting from coaching interventions, continuous education opportunities, cultivating relationships with students and focusing on student success. Collectively the results indicate the coaching model examined positively impacts teacher practice and student engagement. Additionally the model demonstrates great promise for supporting the successful induction of  new alternatively certified teachers as well as supporting teachers at all phases of their career.
