Poster: Using Virtual Reality to Increase Practice and Reflection Opportunities in Teacher Preparation
Conference Thread
An introduction to the roots of TL learning theory and contemporary conceptualizations of TL
Transformative Learning Theory posits that “the way learners interpret and reinterpret their sense experience is, central to making meaning and hence learning” (Mezirow, 1991). In complex task learning domains, such as learning how to teach, Transformative Learning Theory underscores the importance of experience in developing competence and self-efficacy in the craft. However, this also poses unique challenges for allowing learners the opportunity to have needed authentic experiences, while risking harm to others involved. In the case of teacher education, the bulk of the experience occurs in the clinical experience (student teaching). While this period of a pre-service teacher’s preparation is critically important, the students in the pre-service teacher’s tutelage are inevitably put at a degree of risk: academically, emotionally, or in rare cases even physically. However, recent developments in the application of Virtual Reality (VR) for education and training purposes holds great potential in filling the gap of providing authentic experiences for pre-service teachers before they work with actual live students. The purpose of this poster presentation is to share about a current project that aims to inject fully immersive VR teaching experiences into the teacher preparation process.
