Short Description
This presentation focuses on the need for internalizing teacher advocacy through shifting mindsets in alternative certification programs. As school cultures continue to adapt and evolve due to the changing 21st century world in which we live, K-12 students and educators need to gain an awareness of advocacy. This can be achieved within alternative certification programs by incorporating lessons, units, and discussions that incorporate topics such as implicit bias, shifting mindsets, cognitive dissonance/consonance, and metacognition. By including topics for internalizing advocacy in alternative certification teachers, they will then be able to support their own students by teaching them about self-advocacy.
