Expanding Transformative Learning Contexts

This presentation discusses an ongoing project to address food insecurity at a small public university in Oklahoma. Students worked with community partners and university administration officials to propose an on-campus food pantry. Although students met with significant obstacles to creating an on-campus service, they were able to engage in what Christie, et al (2015) refer to as "consciousness-raising" in which learners are able to better understand the social environments and beliefs in which they work. Students were able to apply feedback to modify the proposal until a workable framework was created. The presentation also discusses the transformative learning aspects of this rather large community / school partnership. The presenters will discuss what they learned from the project and how students and faculty at other universities might approach other community / school partnerships.
