Applying Transformative Learning in Teaching

Rural Scholars will participate in a 10-week serviceship opportunity in rural areas during the Summer of 2020. Through the serviceship, Rural Scholars will promote positive change in rural communities by working with Oklahoma State University faculty and local community leaders to conduct action research projects around grand challenges affecting rural citizens and communities in Oklahoma. In addition, Rural Scholars will provide assistance to these communities in the way of service through the interventions occurring as a result of the research conducted. To prepare for such experiences, Rural Scholars will participate in a 16-week course at Oklahoma State University designed to educate them about the substantial issues and challenges rural communities face. Through the course and ensuing summer serviceship opportunty, Scholars will be expected to conduct pertinent research, brainstorm solutions, and offer assistance to improve the resiliency and overall livelihood of the communities they serve. Transformative learning through these experiences will be assessed through student led discussions, oral poster presentations, and written journal reflections.
