Innovative Approaches for Schools to Be In Compliance with SB1383
PRESENTATION TOPIC
EDIBLE FOOD RECOVERY
K-12
ORGANICS
Session Description
Prior to COVID, schools throughout California were getting ready for the implementation of SB 1383, which is required in January 2022. When students return to the classroom, and more importantly, the cafeterias, this topic will again be on the top of their priority list. This session will explore the model programs some school districts have already put in place to both prevent food waste and recover edible food and promote recycling, reduction, and reuse efforts. It will also include a presentation on the important role students can play in helping their districts comply with this legislation by serving as messengers within their communities. Representatives from CalRecycle, nonprofits, and waste industries will share stories of success and challenges in dealing with this important topic to increase the diversion of organic materials.
