Abstract

Children with Selective Mutism (SM) can have particular difficulty at school. Traditional education models require students to speak and interact with others. When children with SM begin school, they may experience higher anxiety levels due to the requirements to socialize and communicate with peers, teachers, and school staff. Therefore, SM can negatively impact student personal/social progress and academic success. This presentation will provide strategies for counselors and educators working with students who have SM.
