Session Abstract
Are you planning an antiracism or social change course/program for faculty, staff, and/or students at your institution? This session will help you measure its impact. We will introduce several scales for assessing racial awareness/sensitivity and discuss procedures for conducting two different quantitative analyses using this type of data in Excel.
Session Description
This year’s AAACE conference theme challenges adult educators to “not only examine but demonstrate how we can effectuate change” in social justice. This session is intended for people who would like to statistically evaluate the efficacy of their social change programs using validated scales for measuring racial awareness, racial sensitivity, etc. By introducing specific scales, providing instructions for utilizing these instruments, and by demonstrating analyses that can be conducted in MS Excel, our session will support adult educators who may have previously been hesitant to incorporate statistical analysis in their program evaluations. It will be valuable to practitioners who seek to demonstrate the impact of their programs beyond anecdotal evidence.
This session will introduce several validated scales for measuring attitudinal change. It will then explain how practitioners can create practical research designs for illustrating their program’s impact on these attitudes. Two designs and analyses will be illustrated in MS Excel. First, we will describe a within-subjects design using paired-samples t-tests and non-equivalent dependent variable to mitigate threats to internal validity. Second, we will describe a between-subjects design using a non-equivalent control group and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA).
