Grounded and Visionary: Advancing the Profound Leadership Concept
Keywords
Profound Leadership, profundity, profound learning
Session Abstract
The purpose of this presentation is to elaborate the concept of profound leadership based on a completed empirical study of the phenomenon of profound leadership through the lens of mature organizational leaders.
Session Description
Profound leadership uses the lens of profound learning to offer a unique synthetic vision of leadership within organizations. Profound learning has been defined as a process that “seek[s] to open up, to ask, and to continually reveal rather than to close down, to answer, or to completely discover." This process is a positive view of learning that emphasizes possibility and wonder; it also inspires and encourages new possibilities for leadership as well. According to Scott et al. (2019), profound leaders are curious, questioning, humble, empathic, humane, collaborative, contextually-oriented, follower-focused, and self-aware. Our empirical study uses a lens created by combining profound learning and profound leadership to understand the experiences of leaders familiar with effectual leadership. Interpretation of the themes has implications for leadership development and training.
