Session Abstract

This presentation provides a framework of cybersecurity literacy or a "cybersecurity mindset" as a critical literacy for adult learners. An example of end-to-end encryption is used to illuminate the four dimensions of a cybersecurity mindset.

Session Description

Cybersecurity is one of the most essential aspects of today's world. Much of the global economy, our social connections, the communication systems, etc. are connected online and we must trust that these systems are safe and secure. However, daily cyber attacks are waged against these systems in order to access our data, including personal information. Cybersecurity literacy or a cybersecurity mindset is essential in helping to address this growing global cyber threat with the goal of making cyberspace accessible and secure for everyone. This presentation will describe the four dimensions of a cybersecurity mindset, including: 1) understanding trust within cyberspace; 2) managing risk; 3) thinking like an adversary; and 4) using ethical reflection and judgment. An example using end-to-end encryption will be used to illuminate these four dimensions within the larger social, organizational, political and personal context within which cybersecurity resides. Developing a cybersecurity mindset as a critical literacy equips individuals with the ability to critically and safely engage in cyberspace.
