Presentation Summary

This study analyses the development of intercultural sensitivity during an international collaborative virtual exchange project wherein university students from the US and South Africa investigated the topic of migration. Findings indicate that these projects afford gains in heightened awareness about global issues while working collaboratively.

Professional Biography

Emilia Alonso-Marks is professor of Spanish, Ohio University. She earned her doctorate in Applied Linguistics from Universidad de Sevilla, Spain. Since 2013, she directs the Institute for the Empirical Study of Language. Her research focuses on language understanding, learning and use in bilingual Spanish-English speakers, heritage speakers and FL learners.

Professional Biography

Siphokazi Magadla is senior lecturer in the department of Political and International Studies, Rhodes University. Her doctorate examined women’s role in the armed struggle and their participation in the state-assisted demobilisation and integration into civilian life in post-apartheid South Africa. She received the Rhodes University Andrew Mellon Inclusive Professoriate grant.
