Presentation Summary

This 8-month narrative inquiry study explored the phenomenon of intercultural competence development through the lived experiences of a Midwestern secondary science teacher. More specifically it considers the ways in which one teacher fosters/facilitates development of intercultural competence among students in her urban, multilingual classrooms.

Uma Maheshwari Ganesan is a third-year doctoral student and Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant in the Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education at University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her research interests are culturally and linguistically responsive science (STEM) teaching; diversity, inclusion, equity, and social justice; multiculturalism; and teacher education.

Amanda R. Morales is an Associate Professor of critical multicultural education at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Her current work focuses on teacher preparation for working with multicultural & multilingual students, teacher diversification pathways, documenting the experiences of pre-service and in-service teachers of Color in predominately white institutions.
