Presentation Summary
This targeted, qualitative study examines the relationship between mother tongue instruction, language policy, literacy, and mobility in Haiti. Focusing on an underrepresented segment of Haiti’s multilingual society, the study examines language attitudes among Haitian Gonâviens regarding the use of French and Kreyòl in schools and society.

Professional Biography
Gerdine M. Ulysse is an Assistant Instructional Professor of French and Kreyòl in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at The University of Chicago. Her research focuses on language variation and language attitudes and factors influencing multilingualism and literacy development in Creolophone communities. She earned a PhD in Second language Acquisition at Carnegie Mellon University.

Katharine E. Burns is Assistant Professor of Second Language Acquisition and Hispanic Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research interests include language ideology, the sociolinguistics of multilingualism, and language variation in the L2 classroom. She is a faculty member in the Ph.D. program in Second Language Acquisition at CMU.
