Presentation Summary

In this presentation, we discuss the implementation of a culture module in Spanish 1 courses. The module is based on the historical contributions of Latinos to the U.S. as depicted in the PBS documentary series Latino Americans. In addition, we explore how this new culture module fostered students’ intercultural sensitivity (Bennett, 1993).

Professional Biography

Cecilia Tocaimaza-Hatch completed her Ph.D. in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin (UT). She is an associate professor in Spanish Linguistics at the University of Nebraska at Omaha in the Department of Foreign Languages & Literature. She researches language learning through service-learning and lexical development in interaction.

She is a professor of Spanish and the Associate Dean of Humanities and Undergraduate Education in the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
