Presentation Summary

In this interactive presentation, we report on our experiences with ungrading in language contexts. Participants will ungrade an assignment and identify the benefits and challenges of going gradeless. We conclude by introducing an ongoing study of language educators' experiences with assessment and discuss resources for those who want to ungrade.

Professional Biography

Janice McGregor is an Assistant Professor of German and faculty member in the SLAT interdisciplinary PhD program at the University of Arizona. Her research deals with learner beliefs and language ideologies in study abroad, authority and authenticity in language and intercultural learning, and qualitative approaches in applied linguistics.

Professional Biography

Nicole Coleman is Assistant Professor of German at Wayne State University. Her research focuses on contemporary German literature, the intersection of literature and human rights, social justice pedagogies, and intercultural competence. She has taught classes with alternative forms of assessment since 2016 and is beginning to study the impact of ungrading on learning and motivation of students.
