Presentation Summary

This presentation demonstrates a pedagogical approach to raising awareness of embodiment in an intercultural virtual exchange. We report on a project between university students from Germany and the USA, in which the topics of embodied collective memory and empathy in social activism practices were explored.

Professional Biography

Ivett Guntersdorfer earned her Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles. She joined the JYM Study Abroad Program and the Institute of Intercultural Communication at the LMU, where she is leading the Institut für Interkulturelle Kommunikation. Prof. Guntersdorfer`s research includes: study abroad in higher education, intercultural competence and empathy.

Professional Biography

Irina Golubeva is an Associate Professor at UMBC (USA), where she directs the MA program in Intercultural Communication. Golubeva’s main research interests concern the development of multilingual awareness and intercultural competence, internationalisation of higher education, and conceptualization of intercultural citizenship.
