Challenges and Opportunities with Surfacing DEI Content
Conference Track
2. Collection Development & Assessment
Abstract
Representation has been a perennial issue in library catalogs, and this began in part with the available taxonomies supporting collection development. The categorization of communities, regions, religions, among other topics have been historical and Anglocentric in nature. The historical nature of bibliographic metadata has made it difficult to surface and organize content. This session will focus on the DEI taxonomy issues relating to interdisciplinary subjects and how the library community is evolving the taxonomy in order to grow their DEI-related collections.
Challenges and opportunities, we will cover:
- Author identity
- Standardization
- Taxonomies
