How to Support Evidence-Based Practice in Recreational Therapy: Grant Writing and Application
Session Description/Research Abstract
The aim of this workshop is to provide hands-on experience to enhance ability and skills in grant search and development. The presenters will review primary funding sources and provide tips in locating the right funding to support your research needs in promoting evidence-based practice. During the session, we will also discuss the key components in developing a grant proposal. Participants will start to work through the process of finding and writing grants to gain experience in this.

Biographical Information
Gena Bell Vargas, Ph.D., CTRS, CA is an Assistant Professor of Instruction in the RT program at Temple University. Additionally, she is the MSRT Program Director. Her clinical background includes an urban acute psychiatric inpatient setting working with people experiencing symptoms of depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia. She has also worked in inpatient physical rehabilitation with persons that have experienced strokes, TBIs, SCIs, and amputations. In 2016, she acquired her Certification in Aromatherapy and has since presented conference sessions and guest lectures on the evidence-based and safe implementation of aromatherapy in recreational therapy settings. Additionally, Gena is a Member-at-Large of the Recreational Therapy Foundation Board.

Biographical Information
Dr. Pei-Chun Hsieh is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies at Brock University. She also serves as Member-at-Large for the Research Awards for the Recreational Therapy Foundation to promote evidence-based practice in the field. Her research focuses on understanding the role of leisure in supporting individuals with chronic conditions in maintaining and enhancing their well-being and flourishing at different stages throughout their lives.

Biographical Information
Aurora Verlin, MS, CTRS is a instructor of recreational therapy at Temple University. After practicing recreational therapy with older adults in a variety of settings, and serving as a personal care home administrator, she now focuses on teaching students about older adult care, professionalism, administrative issues, and the clinical process. Aurora also serves as the President of the Recreational Therapy Foundation, and is the co-founder of the RT Student Summit, a conference for recreational therapy students. She is committed to involving students in this profession.
