Session Abstract

In the California State University (CSU) system, faculty librarians can take a semester-long sabbatical after every 6 years of employment. There has not been an easy way to cover gaps in Alma/Primo coverage in the past, but due to the move to more remote work in libraries, a shared Alma/Primo system in the CSUs since 2017, and administrative and system trust across the institutions, the systems librarian from California State University, Northridge (CSUN) was able to cover the systems work for a sabbatical librarian in Spring 2022 for the Sonoma State University (SSU) campus, an institution 650 kilometers away, in a fiscally responsible and less disruptive way. This presentation will describe the pre-work for this new temporary position, the kinds of systems projects and support completed, and the benefits to both institutions. This experience can be practically applied to cover gaps in systems librarian employment, medical/personal/parental leaves, course release time and sabbaticals.
