Session Abstract

Back in 2010, Monash University joined the ANZ Collaborative Partnership to respond to Ex Libris’ Unified Resource Management system now known as Alma. Monash implemented Alma in 2013. By 2019 Monash was experiencing challenges in managing ongoing optimisation, sustaining internal knowledge and support, and had identified the need to improve system governance. Opportunities to improve the effectiveness of systems and processes, implement new tools and services, and harmonise Monash University's global service and systems infrastructure were overly complex to activate. The global pandemic crystallised these challenges. Shifts in user expectations, the information access landscape, and the transformative opportunities of a new organisational structure opened a new door. After almost a decade of using Alma, Monash make the decision to start over. This is the story of Monash University’s journey from Alma early implementer to re-implementer, and why we needed to go back to the future.
