Reviewing a TR Program: How Nationwide Children’s Hospital utilized the literature to support the Intensive Pain Rehabilitation and Education Program

Session Description/Research Abstract

Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio is one of the nation’s top pediatric hospital systems. In March of 2020, the Intensive Pain Rehabilitation and Education Program (IPREP) was established, consisting of a multidisciplinary day treatment program to treat children and adolescents with chronic pain. In this session, the role of therapeutic recreation (TR) will be introduced including services offered for chronic pain management. Additionally, a discussion of a literature review completed by the TR staff within the program will be studied and key themes will also be presented. Lastly, there will be a detailed look at the current interventions and how these can be utilized in a multitude of settings across the profession. This session will benefit a therapist working directly or indirectly in chronic pain.

Learning Outcomes

1) By the end of the session, participants will be able to understand Therapeutic Recreation’s role in Chronic Pain management. (FDK 14, IMP 42)
2) By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify at least 3 themes identified during a literature review for Therapeutic Recreation within chronic pain. (ADM 44, ADV 56)
3) By the end of the session, participants will be able to identify at least 5 interventions for Therapeutic Recreation in chronic pain. (IMP 38, IMP 40)

Biographical Information

Jamie Sympson is a graduate of the University of Toledo and holds a bachelor’s degree in Recreational Therapy. Jamie has received her specialization designation in Behavioral Health for her field as of 2021. Jamie has worked at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) for nearly 5 years in behavioral health and chronic pain settings. Jamie currently works as the Clinical Leader for Clinical Therapies Behavioral Health located at NCH in which she directly supervises Occupational Therapy (OT), Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and Therapeutic Recreation (TR) team members. Jamie directly manages team members and supports program development within the inpatient pediatric behavioral health units, the Child and Adolescent Partial Hospitalization Program, the Eating Disorder Clinic, the Early Childhood Mental Health clinic, and the Intensive Pain Rehabilitation and Education Program (IPREP). Jamie is a member of the Ohio Recreation Therapy Association (ORTA) and the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA) as well as an affiliate member of the Ohio Occupational Therapy Association (OOTA) and the Ohio Speech-Language-Hearing Association (OSHLA).

Jamie has remained integrated in the IPREP program since the launch of services in early 2020. Jamie has sustained the development of TR and OT services within IPREP alongside other TR and OT staff members to support patients and the caregivers served. Lastly, Jamie currently participates as the primary CTRS within IPREP serving on an interdisciplinary team.

Biographical Information

Valerie is a graduate of The University of Toledo and has been a CTRS since 2008. In 2007 she earned a Bachelor of Science in Recreational Therapy and continued her education in 2008 with a Master of Arts degree in Recreation Administration. She started her career at The University of Toledo Medical Center working on both the geriatric psychiatry and physical rehabilitation units. In 2012 she moved to Columbus, Ohio where she worked as a contingent staff member at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH). Additionally, she has been a part-time faculty member via distance learning for The University of Toledo School of Exercise Rehabilitation Sciences. Currently, Valerie is employed full-time at Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she is the evidence-based practice coordinator for the inpatient acute and behavioral health TR teams. She primarily works with patients in the behavioral health service line. Valerie is the current past president for the Ohio Recreational Therapy Association and was the 2021 winner of the Outstand Professional Award from ATRA.

Monica Davidson is a graduate of the University of Toledo and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Recreational Therapy. Monica completed her internship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital during the summer on 2019 within the inpatient psychiatry unit. Monica joined the TR BH team shortly after completing her internship and has been with NCH for the past 3 years. Monica has worked within the Behavioral Health and Chronic Pain settings. Monica previously worked as the primary CTRS within the Intensive Pain Rehabilitation and Education Program (IPREP). Monica is a member the American Therapeutic Recreation Association (ATRA).
